Just in case you didn’t know, Suzyn Waldman spent 15 years on and off Broadway before becoming a radio broadcaster for WCBS 880, and even starred (as Aldonza) opposite Richard Kiley in a 1979 revival of “Man of La Mancha” for two years. She’s also performed the National Anthem at many Yankees and Knicks home games over the years. 

“I was very, very good,” she says. “I just wasn’t an original, you know? People would say I had the heart of Judy Garland and I belted like Streisand and I had the range of Barbara Cook. But these people already exist.” 

Waldman was voted the worst commentator in New York by the fans in a Newsday poll a few years ago. Back in 2007, she signed a contract extension to continue broadcasting Yankees games on the radio through at least 2011. So, you’ll have to at least listen to her for at least one more season. I know some of the things she says or does on the air might irritate you, but I don’t really have a problem with what she does. I find it funny though, because people make fun of her voice and all, meanwhile she was performing on Broadway with that same voice. (more…)
