NO ONE'S LOOKING AT YOU, MIKE! Merlyweds Michael Kay and his much, MUCH better half, Channel 11 news anchor Jodi Applegate, at their gala wedding last night at The Plaza.  'I DO': Rudy Giuliani makes the happy couple husband and wife.

The long anticipated Michael Kay wedding. Let the jokes roll in.

From the NY Post:

Yankees broadcaster Michael Kay and TV news anchor Jodi Applegate tied the knot at The Plaza last night in a lavish ceremony packed with pinstripe powerhouses and skippered by former Mayor and Bronx Bombers die-hard Rudy Giuliani.

Several former Yankee greats such as Paul O’Neill, Tino Martinez and Darryl Strawberry, were among the 350 guests who turned out to watch the lovebirds exchange vows at the storied hotel shortly after twilight.

“It’s a great day for Michael Kay,” Strawberry told The Post. “He waited this long for the right one. It’s amazing.”

Baseball bigs, including Yanks manager Joe Girardi and team co-owner Hal Steinbrenner rubbed elbows with TV personalities such as NBC anchor Brian Williams and Applegate’s WPIX/Channel 11 colleagues Kaity Tong and weatherman Mr. G.

And actor Danny Aiello, Kay’s uncle, was on hand to fete the happy couple as were former Yanks and Kay’s YES-network colleagues Al Leiter, David Cone and John Flaherty.

The president of Fordham University, Kay’s alma mater, gave the benediction before a grinning Giuliani took the helm.

Applegate donned a white empire lace dress designed by Suzanne Neville from the Wedding Atelier bridal boutique. She changed her dress three more times throughout the night, a guest said.

The auburn-haired stunner also sported sparkly, 14-carat diamond earrings on loan from London Jewelry, and custom silk gloves, silk velvet cuffs and a white fox fur stole. (more…)

Just the other day, my family went out to celebrate my brother’s birthday. We decided to check out Darryl Strawberry’s new restaurant, which is called Strawberry’s Sports Grill. It’s located on 42-15 235th street (next to the LIRR train station) in Douglaston, NY.

We had no trouble finding a parking spot, as they had a parking lot close by and offered valet parking. As we walked in the place, we were greeted by Mike Strawberry, who happens to be Darryl’s brother. He was very nice and even shook my hand. I was amazed by all the memorabilia and autographed items they had on the walls. Darryl’s old locker is even in the restaurant. The waiters and waitresses walked around the restaurant in Yankees (#39) and Mets (#19) t-shirts, which I thought was pretty cool.

Darryl has stated many times that he would be involved in the restaurant and he would pop in from time to time to mingle with the fans, and even surprise some people by serving them food. Apparently, he was at his restaurant the day before, but left for vacation when we went. No hard feelings, but hopefully I’ll get to meet him one day. Check out the Menu

Great food, good service and a really nice atmosphere for any sports fan. I’ll be back soon. Two Thumbs Up!

From Strawberry’s Website:

“Strawberry’s Sport Grill features a menu of high quality yet casual fare, including an extensive burger menu, mouth-watering steaks, house-smoked BBQ, fresh-colorful salads, and firey chicken wings. The Grill offers a full bar, including 16 draft lines and a wide selection of expertly crafted cocktails. Guests can cheer as they watch their favorite team on any of our 16 HDTVs.”

The 50 highest-earning American athletes (#5 A-Rod, #8 Jeter, #13 Sabathia, #35 Teixeira, #50 Burnett)

Yankees, Chinese noodle firm reach deal The New York Yankees have reached a four-year sponsorship agreement with a Chinese instant-noodle company. Uni-President Enterprises will get field-level signage between first base and the right-field foul pole. The Yankees say the company will also have a full-page ad in the team’s game program.”

The New York Post reports that Doc Gooden has abandoned his family.

We Hear from the New York Post: “That Strawberry’s Sports Grill opened on August 5th in Queens with more than $300,000 worth of game-used memorabilia, World Series trophies, signed photos and even Darryl Strawberry’s old locker from Shea Stadium, donated by such friends as Alex Rodriguez, Michael Jordan and Chuck Knoblauch.”

Ben Nicholson-Smith over at  MLB Trade Rumors wanted readers to imagine where Derek Jeter would end up if he didn’t sign with the New York Yankees. In my opinion, almost every team in Major League Baseball would want him. Of course some teams are already set with an all-star caliber shortstop (Hanley, Reyes, Furcal), but let’s not forget that Jeter has ranked at the top of his position for years. I don’t see why people want to even talk about the situation, considering he is a Yankee For Life. (more…)

It only took a little time for an ex-Yankee to stand up for A-Rod against the tag team of Dallas Braden and his grandmother. Darryl Strawberry had this to say about the whole situation:

“How can they dog someone who’s going to the Hall of Fame?” Strawberry said during a trip to the state Capitol.

“A-Rod said it pretty clear, 15 minutes of fame and he wouldn’t waste his time,” Strawberry added.

Strawberry wasn’t impressed that Braden turned in a perfect performance against the Tampa Bay Rays, the team with the best record in baseball.

“So what?” he said. “That doesn’t mean he’s great because he pitched a perfect game.”

“Baseball is a period of time of success, and A-Rod has done it consistently year in and year out. Who are they to talk about him?”

Strawberry, in Albany to tout cancer research, dismissed Braden’s unwritten rule: “Whoever came up with that idea, whoever Braden is, is exaggerating.”

Darryl Strawberry is going to appear on ‘Apprentice’. “No, the former Mets and Yankees slugger isn’t up for a front-office position, but something a bit more television-friendly. It was revealed Monday by NBC that Strawberry, 47, is one of the cast members in the next season of “Celebrity Apprentice,” entrepreneur Donald Trump’s reality show that begins airing in March after the Vancouver Olympic Winter Games.”

LoHud.com’s Chad Jennings wonders if the Yankees’ lineup would seem better if Curtis Granderson and Brett Gardner swapped positions, since Granderson has the power of a corner outfielder and Gardner has the speed of a center fielder.

The agent for Chien-Ming Wang told 1050 ESPN New York’s Andrew Marchand that he has heard from 15 teams, whom are interested in Wang.

Blomberg wants to do radio. He  joined Ed Randall on WFAN radio and fell in love with the microphone, opening another potential avenue for the 61-year-old who for years has had a hand in everything from motivational speaking, to scouting for the Yankees, to running sports camps for youths in New Jersey. “I want to do radio,” says Blomberg, who was taken by the Bombers with the first pick of the 1967 draft and spent seven of his eight major league seasons in pinstripes. “It’s a natural thing, I love to talk to people and talk baseball.”

Bruney loves his facial hair. “I can finally grow some facial hair after four years,” he said. “That’s great. That was one of the first things I thought about. When I was traded, I said, ‘Wow, finally, I can grow a beard.’”

David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution believes that if his price tag drops to well below $10MM, Johnny Damon could be a good fit for the Braves.

Strikeouts on the rise for Sanchez. “In his last four regular season appearances with Scranton, Sanchez had 22 strikeouts in 18.1 innings. During the Triple-A playoffs, he had 17 strikeouts in 10 innings. This winter in Venezuela, Sanchez has 47 strikeouts in 33 innings (his previous three winters combined he had just 22 strikeouts in 34.1 innings).”

Joe Pawlikowski of River Ave. Blues wants the Yankees to stay away from free agent outfielder Marlon Byrd.

Randy Johnson announces retirement. “I would like to officially announce my retirement. I’ve taken this long because I definitely wanted to kind of relax from the season being over and make sure I had a clear head when I made this decision, and that I would be making it wholeheartedly, and that I would stick with it. Without a doubt, 100 percent, I will be retiring at this time.”

Bay: “I just kind of assumed Damon would be back”. “I didn’t really see them having a hole,” Bay said. “They moved some guys, and I just kind of assumed Damon was going to be back. I just never really gave it a lot of thought to be honest.”

The Misery Tenor. The Yankees have moved on and they have no plans for Ronan Tynan to sing during the 7th inning stretch at future home games.

A-Rod still has Madonna on his mind. “Actress Kate Hudson reportedly dumped sportsman Alex Rodriguez, her boyfriend of nine-months, because he is still obsessed with Madonna.” (more…)
