From Democrat and Chronicle:

Irondequoit’s Cito Culver has signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees, with a reported bonus of nearly $1 million.

“We are very excited to get Cito signed so quickly and get him out on the field to begin his development as a Major League prospect,” said Damon Oppenheimer, vice president of amateur scouting for the Yankees.

The switch-hitting shortstop was selected by the Yankees last week with the No. 32 pick in the draft. He hit .561 with 9 home runs and 38 runs batted in for Irondequoit. Culver is in Tampa at the Yankees minor-league complex and is scheduled to return this weekend.

He graduates from Irondequoit High School on Sunday.

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reported that the Yankees signed Culver for a $940,000 signing bonus. That is the figure recommended by Major League Baseball for the 32nd pick.

Culver’s career could begin as early as next week. He is expected to join the Yankees rookie-level team in the Gulf Coast League, playing home games in Tampa. (more…)

With their 1st round pick in the 2010 MLB Amateur Draft, the New York Yankees selected Cito Culver (32nd Overall) from Irondequoit HS (NY). (Shortstop, DOB: 1992-08-26). In total, the Yankees took 50 players (19 from high school and 31 from college: RHP — 21, LHP – 7, C — 4, Inf — 5, OF— 13)

Press Release from the NY Yankees:

The New York Yankees tonight selected 17-year-old switch-hitting shortstop Chris “Cito” Culver out of Irondequoit High School in Rochester, N.Y., with their first-round selection (32nd pick overall) in the 2010 First-Year Player Draft.

Culver, listed at 6 feet, 172 pounds, batted .561 (37-for-66) with 10 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 38 RBI and 20 walks in 22 regular season games this past season as a high school senior, according to his school’s Web site. He also had a .933 fielding percentage, committing just eight errors in 120 total chances, helping lead his school to the Monroe County Division title. Named his team’s most valuable player in each of the last three seasons, Culver was also a three-time all-county selection and an Under Armour All-American.

From Damon Oppenheimer:

“We were able to draft a very athletic kid who can play a good shortstop,” said Damon Oppenheimer, Yankees Vice President of Amateur Scouting. “He has a plus arm, is a solid runner and is an excellent hitter. He’s a player we are happy to have. It was an easy decision for us.”

Here’s some interesting information about Culver’s father:

Culver’s father, Christopher Culver, Sr. won’t be joining in on any draft parties, as he is scheduled to be imprisoned for at least six more years after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including first-degree burglary and third-degree arson. He burned down the family’s Rochester home on Easter Sunday 2008.
