Yankees World Series

1996 World Series Quotes

“They [the Braves after taking 2–0 lead in the Series] said they could beat the ’27 Yankees. But they forgot about the ’96 Yankees.” —Joe Girardi after winning World Series (from Baseball Weekly).

“We play today, we win today. ‘Das it.”—Mariano Duncan, before Game 6 at Yankee Stadium.

“The Yankees have marched through Georgia, and where have we heard that before?”—Vin Scully, radio broadcast at the end of Game 5

“Again the 2–2 to Leyritz…in the air to left field…back…at the track…at the wall…we are tied!”—Joe Buck’s call on Jim Leyritz’s game-tying three-run HR in the top of the eighth inning in Game 4

“Once again, it will be a 3–2. The stretch and pitch. Swung on and popped up again off third. Hayes has room. Hayes make the catch! Yankees win! The Yankees win! The New York Yankees have won the 1996 World Series. They have surmounted every challenge! They have climbed every mountain and the New York Yankees are World Champions!”—John Sterling calls the final out in Game 6

“Fly ball into deep right field, (Paul) O’Neill is there…Ballgame! The Yankees win it, 1–0…as Wetteland gets the save for Pettite.”—Joe Buck calling the final out of Game 5.

“Another chance to the left side, Hayes waits…the Yankees are champions of baseball!”—Joe Buck’s call of the final out of Game 6

1998 World Series Quotes

“From ear to ear, you can feel Darryl Strawberry smiling.”—FOX announcer Tim McCarver after the Yankees win. Darryl had cancer and could not play in the 1998 postseason.

“And The Yankees have done it again, #24, they are the world champions in 1998!”—Joe Buck calling the final out of the series. (more…)
