The 2010 New York Yankees have sprinted out of the gate, and have completely bulldozed over every team in sight. With the win yesterday, the Yankees now own a record of (W-L, 12-5). The Bombers had never won four series to start a season in 84 years until last Saturday. They have now taken five consecutive series from their opponents, and a win today against the Angels would make it six consecutive.

The team overall ranks at the top of the league in several offensive and pitching categories. Not only that, but the team did not commit an error in 12 straight games, the longest April errorless streak in franchise history. Over the years, you never really heard anyone talk about how good the defense on the team was. I guess things change when you add a guy like Teixeira..with the likes of Gardner, Granderson and Cervelli.

Notables:

  • Robinson Cano ranks 5th in AL Batting AVG (.369)
  • Andy Pettitte ranks 1st in AL Wins (3) and ERA (1.29)
  • Mariano Rivera ranks 1st in AL Saves (6) [along with a 0.00ERA and a 0.57 WHIP]
  • Andy had his best April ERA ever at 1.29
  • Jeter had a .380AVG through his first 50 at-bats, which was his highest since 1999
  • We’ve seen two near no-hitters by C.C. Sabathia & Phil Hughes
  • 4/5 Pitchers on the Yankees staff own a ERA of 3.20 or below (Vazquez owns a 8.27ERA)

The team has faced some of the toughest competition in the league, including the Red Sox, Angels and Rays and have prevailed. Andy is acting like this team’s ace, Teixeira and Nick Johnson have yet to hit the ball, and Vazquez will only improve. With A-Rod being healthy this season, Teixeira and Alex will play a full season together, hitting back-to-back in the lineup.

The 1998 New York Yankees owned a (W-L) record of 14-5 (19 games) on April 25th, 1998. That team finished with a franchise record regular-season standing of 114-48, and was dubbed ‘the best team ever’. The 2010 New York Yankees own a record of 12-5 (17 games), and they have yet to play today’s game. Questions will arise about how good this year’s team could be. The possibilities are endless, and I believe the best is yet to come. Nobody is saying flat-out that this team is better, because that just wouldn’t be fair. From the looks of it though, this team could get better than it already is and that’s a scary thought.
