Brett Gardner has gone 8-for-44 over the last 17 games (.181AVG). Over that span (since July 30th), he’s knocked in only 2RBI’s.
With another 0-for-3 outing tonight, Francisco Cervelli has picked up only 11 hits and 3RBI’s over his last 71 at-bats (since June 26th). That comes out to a .154AVG. At the beginning of June, Cervelli was hitting over .300. It’s hard to believe that he’s dropped off so much. Remember when some crazy fans thought that this guy would be Posada’s heir apparent?
With Francisco’s recent struggles at the plate and his shaky defense of late, are the Yankees going to call up Jesus Montero any time soon?
Add that depressing news to the fact that Jorge, Jeter, ARod
and Tex aren’t near to what they were last year and I’d say it’s nothing short of a miracle that we’re still tied for first. Of course the starting pitching seems better this year although
Phil Franchise is starting to labor a bit, Andy is still out of commission and AJ is well, AJ. I left out the fact that Granderson has been a disappointment. He is what Detroit
thought he was when they were willing to trade him, a .240 hitter who can’t hit left handers. All that said, Boston is considerably weaker than they were and Tampa Bay has gone on some losing streaks but they are getting healthier and it wouldn’t surprise me if they open a bit of a lead by September.
I’m a die hard pinstripe man, but this team has been hard to watch of late.
Gardner & Cervelli are both slap hitters without much power, so nobody should be surprised by their tumbles of late. Defenses have made the necessary adjustments to their styles, as have pitchers. If I see Brett try to go the other way one more time on an inside change, I may just scream.
As we’ve heard, the back of your baseball card is a pretty good indicator of where your numbers will be at seasons end.
I wouldn’t count on seeing Montero before September. But if A-Rod and Swish’s injuries mean any time lost, you might see Brandon Laird.
It’s easy to blame these two, but the reality is were talking about the #8 and 9 hitters. We won a WS last year with Melky Cabrera filling that role.
It’s the key #1 and #4 hitters that concern me. Jeter and A-Rod look like they’ve aged 5 years overnight, and Jorge is too banged up to play everyday. That’s where we should be looking, and there’s really nothing that can be done about it.
