News and Notes (Courtesy of MLB.com):
- Austin Kearns finally made an impression in a Yankee uniform on Thursday, when he drilled his ninth home run of the season and his first since being traded to New York at the non-waiver Trade Deadline. Kearns, who went hitless in his first three games as a Yankee, has hit in four straight games and is batting .316 (6-for-19) since the trade.
- Reliever David Robertson logged his first save of the season on Thursday, filling in for fatigued closer Mariano Rivera. Robertson has made 15 straight scoreless appearances, and prior to Thursday, he had held opposing batters hitless in their last 23 at-bats. Robertson gave up two hits on Thursday but managed to get the final out.
- The Yankees struck out 17 times on Wednesday to tie a dubious franchise record. … Fifteen of Kansas City’s next 21 games will be played at home.
- Eight of Kansas City’s last 10 games have been decided by two runs or fewer, and the Royals are 2-6 in those circumstances.
- Boone Logan will celebrate his 26th birthday on Friday.
- Pettitte was held out of a simulated game on Thursday in Tampa due to a stiff left hip flexor tendon. Pettitte hasn’t pitched since July 18, and he’s been confined to the disabled list with a strained left groin for the last three weeks.
The game will take place at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. It’s slated to start at 8:10PM ET. The game is being televised on the YES Network. The game can also be heard on the radio on WCBS 880.
