News and Notes (Courtesy of MLB.com):
- You might think that Derek Jeter is running out of milestones, but he reached an interesting one in the first inning of Wednesday’s game. Jeter singled for hit No. 2,877 of his distinguished career, a marker that moved him past Hall of Famer Mel Ott for the most hits by a player who spent his whole career with a team based in New York.
- Jeter, nearing the game’s exclusive 3,000-hit club, has played in 47 straight games without making an error, the longest streak of his career. New York’s leadoff man batted just .244 in June and July (51-for-209), but he’s batting .378 (14-for-37) thus far in August and will pace the team’s offense once the playoffs roll around.
- Sixteen of Kansas City’s next 22 games will be played at home.
- Along with Teixeira, Eddie Matthews, Albert Pujols and Daryl Strawberry are the only other players to hit 25 home runs in each of their first eight seasons.
- New York (61-0), Oakland (47-0) and Kansas City (37-0) are the only big league teams that have yet to lose a game when leading after eight innings.
- Outfielder Gregor Blanco left the Royals on Tuesday to be present for the birth of his child. Blanco is the fourth Kansas City player to leave for that reason this year.
- Infielder Josh Fields, on the disabled list after undergoing right hip surgery, will begin an injury rehab assignment in the Arizona Rookie League.
- Seven of Kansas City’s last nine games have been decided by two runs or fewer, and the Royals are 2-5 in those circumstances.
The game will take place at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri. It’s slated to start at 8:10PM ET. The game is being televised on the YES Network. The game can also be heard on the radio on WCBS 880.
