News and Notes (Courtesy of MLB.com):
- The Yanks are a season-high 27 games over .500 following their 7-1 win over the Royals on Friday.
- With their four-run first, the Yankees have now scored at least four runs in an inning 34 times — the most in the Majors this season.
- The Royals are in a stretch in which they will have just one day off between July 16 and Aug. 15, including their current workload of 20 games in 20 days. Their next off-day will come in Seattle on Aug. 5.
- David DeJesus is set to have surgery on his right thumb in Cleveland on Monday and will be forced to sit out until at least September. One of the team’s top hitters and consistently impressive defenders, the 30-year-old DeJesus tore his ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb while chasing Derek Jeter’s fly ball Thursday night in Yankee Stadium. “An all-around player of his caliber is really rare,” Royals manager Ned Yost said Friday. “He’s so underrated nationally.”
- To help fill the void left by DeJesus, Kansas City called up Alex Gordon from Triple-A Omaha on Friday. Drafted as a third baseman in 2005, Gordon was hitting just .194 when he was sent down May 2 to start developing into an outfielder. Gordon started in right field Friday and went 0-for-4 with an error. “It’s not the way we wanted to get Alex Gordon up here,” Yost said. “We wanted to get Alex Gordon up here as an outfielder and see where he’s at and see what he’s capable of doing in an everyday routine. That has happened now.”
- Jorge Posada became the 12th player in Yankees history to drive in 1,000 runs Friday night, as his double down the right-field line in the first inning put him in exclusive company. He is one of 24 active players with 1,000 RBIs.
- Nick Swisher was a late scratch from the lineup Friday due to discomfort in his left Achilles tendon. He was not able to nail down exactly when he suffered the injury, but the pain was evident, as he entered New York’s clubhouse limping, with his left Achilles completely wrapped in bandages.
- Mark Teixeira, hit by a pitch in the first inning Friday, has safely reached base in 39 consecutive games. It’s the longest streak of Teixeira’s career and the longest by a Yankees player since Rodriguez’s 53-game streak in 2004.
The game will take place at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. It’s slated to start at 1:05PM ET. The game is being televised on the YES Network. The game can also be heard on the radio on WCBS 880. Enjoy the game. Go Yankees!
