As many of you know, the Yankees are in the hunt to close out a deal with the Mariners for Cliff Lee. Yankees prospect, Jesus Montero, is in the middle of it all. This is the same player we’ve heard about for years, that was eventually going to replace Jorge Posada behind the dish. There’s also that argument that he could wind up as a DH, with his defensive skills supposedly not being not up to par. Even though most of us fans have never seen Montero play in-person, the things we hear about this kid…it made us anticipate his eventual promotion to the big leagues. I guess you can’t get too attached to prospects, because they can be dealt when you least expect them to be. Montero was once a prospect that was “untouchable.”
About an hour ago, Buster Olney reported that an executive involved in the Cliff Lee talks said the deal “is just about done.
Then we hear this: (Ken Davidoff of Newsday)
“There will be no negotiating window for long-term deal with Lee if Yankees get him. NYY confident they can re-sign him eventually.”
Hearing there’s a “snag” in the Yankees-Mariners talks for Lee, but could just be hiccup. Yankees are still hopeful they can finish it.
Also, I hear there’s nothing hot on Vazquez. Yankees could take until 7/31 to decide what to do on him. Hughes to bullpen is option
Mariners have told many interested teams that they’re out of the Lee sweepstakes. All signs point to #Yankees completing this deal.
….this deal ain’t over yet. Let’s see how it unfolds. What do you guys think about all of this?
First of all it’s “then”, not “than” but, more importantly, this is a no brainer for the Yanks. I love good prospects and I am loathe to give up a big time one like Montero but this trade gives them the best starting rotation in the solar system. They have to do it…they will do it. By gametime, Cliff Lee will be sitting in our dugout!
Honestly, I love this deal. The Yankees now have the best rotation in baseball by far and can now run away with the division. We can also replenish the farm system by dealing Vazquez, or make an even bigger splash and acquire Jayson Werth.
Either way, I love it.
monkeyjaw-When I try to break the news..I’m in a rush…sorry I can’t be grammatically correct.
You guys are both right….it’s VERY hard to go against this move.

Since this is basically the same scenario I played out yesterday, I’m all for it. Montero can’t throw to secon with any accuracy yet and his footwork is atrocious. The Yanks slotted him at catcher because that’s where they saw their biggest position need in the next 2 years. The reality is, he’s a RH first baseman – but he’ll never get a call up as long as he plays there. (Ask Juan Miranda). Better to trade him now, while his trade value is still high.
BTW, I just watched the noon SportsCenter. Olney reported that he expects the trade to be completed before tonight’s game.
I think it would be very helpful for you to put a time stamp (not just day) on your posts so that when someone notes that “about an hour ago” has some relevance. Personally, I hope the Yanks are just driving up the price for everyone else and then plan on jumping out of the fray. Half our team is going to the all-star game already, how much do you want to win it? Do we just want to lock it down for the sake of mopping up the competition?
Man, I hate when I get busy because I miss this stuff >;[
