So I was browsing around on Baseball-Reference today and I came across an interesting comparison that you can see below this paragraph. Before I get to the stats, do realize that this is just a snapshot of two players as they are in the season right now, it is not a question of who would you want for the next 10 years. So without any further adu, which of the players below would you rather have on your team at this moment?
Player A
PA | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
308 | 44 | 82 | 24 | 1 | 3 | 34 | 1 | 33 | 27 | .303 | .377 | .432 |
Player B
PA | R | H | 2B | 3B | HR | RBI | SB | BB | SO | BA | OBP | SLG |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
295 | 53 | 80 | 6 | 4 | 5 | 29 | 24 | 33 | 41 | .314 | .396 | .427 |
Have you made your selection yet? Good. After the jump, find out who each player is. You may be surprised at who you picked.
Player A is Joe Mauer.
Player B is Brett Gardner.
On top of that, Mauer has 3.9 million All Star Votes while Brett has 1.1 million. Then again, if Brett was a catcher with those statistics, he’d likely be getting more than 1.1 million votes.
I’m surprised he even has 1.1 million votes. Good for him, the little scamp ;)
btw, I picked Mauer. I guess the 24 doubles tipped it in his favor. Are you sure Brett only has 6 doubles?
According to Baseball-Reference and ESPN he has 6 doubles. I think I might go for Gardner with his 24 steals….
Great match up Rob. I leaned towards Brett myself. A steal is as good as a double.
I want to play baseball!^_^
I’d still go with Mauer. After adjusting for home parks, you see where Target Field is killing his power numbers. All in all, though, Gardner is having a great season. It’s good to see him getting some recognition.
