As the years have gone by, I’ve noticed a slight decrease in the innings workload for Mariano Rivera. Come postseason time, they use him for as many outs as they need, but I’m talking about regular season here. With age, I guess it’s expected that management doesn’t want to give Mariano extra work and keep him healthy and rested come playoff time. According to ESPN.com projections, he’s expected to toss 61 innings by the end of the season, based on how they’ve used him so far. The last time Mariano totaled less than that amount was back in 2002, when his season consisted of three trips to the disabled list for groin and shoulder strains. Even at 40 years-old, Mo is well on his way to having one of the best season’s of his career.
- In other news, Mariano Rivera thinks it might be a good idea to take it one year at a time. When I asked if he would be amenable to doing what Andy Pettitte (another free-agent-to-be) does, and take one-year contracts and determine at the end of each season if he wants to continue to play, Rivera said, “Something like that would be fine.”
