In the Yankees’ long line of history, they have retired in total 16 numbers for 17 players (Including Jackie Robinson) which is far above any other team in Major League Baseball history and over the course of the next 5 years will be adding more numbers to the list. Below is the list of current retired numbers with the appropriately named player for those numbers.
Now, in the next decade, give or take, the Yankees will be adding more numbers to the already historic list. Personally, I believe the Yankees will retire all the below listed numbers.
When do I think all these numbers will be retired? Hard to tell. Derek and Mo’s numbers are a given to happen within the first year or two of retirement. However, I don’t think Torre’s number will be retired with Brian Cashman working in the organization considering their falling out, but crazier things have happened. There is something that tells me Bernie and Posada’s numbers might take a little bit longer, but will eventually join Mariano and Derek’s numbers in time. Another issue that will come up is whether or not Pettitte’s number should be retired due to his admitted use of HGH. Now, I believe what he has told us, so I don’t think he should be penalized for what he has done. I mean, the Yankees have brought him back the last two years, so obviously they don’t think it’s an issue.
So there is the potential for 23 numbers for 25 players to be retired in the next decade, give or take, which is kind of crazy, but after this group gets their just due, it won’t be for a while that another number gets retired.
Jeet and Mo is a sure thing they are the face of this Generation. I hoping they retire Paulie’s number 21 too.
I doubt very highly that they ever retire Joe Torre’s number unless it was for someone else.
Eh. You might be right about Torre, I’m going to look into it…
Joe Torre’s number must be retired. He’s a legend. Made the playoffs every year and brought four world championships to New York. Clueless Joe? I don’t think so.
If you notice..nobody has even mentioned the #6 since Torre left. I’m pretty sure they are saving it for a Joe Torre Day sometime down the road. Maybe after Torre retires after the 2011 season. (Torre said that 2011 will be his last year)
I think it would be a waste to retire number 6 and I highly doubt they would ever actually do it especially considering his current relationship with the Yankees.
#2 and #42 are the only sure things out of that group.
Jorge has been a great catcher, but he’s not among the Yogi’s and Ruth’s and Gherigs. Monument Park is for the absolute best of the best.
While we all loved O’Neill, in no way do his numbers warrant being in Monument Park.
Pettitte; again, very good but not amazing.
Bernie, I could see him possibly getting in, if he manages to get into the HOF.
Torre, thats a debate for another day
Rob A- How is it a waste to retire #6?
Zell
I refer to my post today. I rest my case.
Agree that Jeter and Mo are the only two for sure retirees. If O’Neill ever does it will be on fan favorite merit (really could we have ever had a better Gamer than Paully) Jorge and Pettite have at least one more year to make there case so I think we shouldn’t talk about them until then. Torre….hmmm, I do think he has a very strong case to be retired and probably should be. I think it would be after George’s time and the Steinbrenner kids can’t hold grudges. It was definately time for a change, but it was one hell of a ride!
Heya this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with
HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding knowledge so I wanted to get
guidance from someone with experience. Any
help would be greatly appreciated!
