From The LoHud Yankees Blog:

On this day, the only exception to that rule was Phil Hughes, who made his final extended spring training start this morning at the Yankees minor league complex. According to Girardi, Hughes threw 84 pitches across six innings. He had “five or six strikeouts,” Girardi said.

Hughes will make his regular season debut on Thursday, and Girardi said there will be no pitch limit. “He’s the same (as the other starters),” Girardi said. “He’s built up.”

As for how the Yankees will manage Hughes innings this season, Girardi said the same thing he said this spring: The limit is higher than Joba Chamberlain’s was last year, and so the team isn’t worried about it right now. They’ve told Hughes not to worry about it when he pitches. If they have to adjust, they’ll adjust, but right now there’s no set plan for when they’ll skip his turn in the rotation.

“If there’s a situation where we feel we need to skip him, we’ll skip him,” Girardi said.

Hughes’ highly anticipated first start will be Thursday (the third game of the LAA series). It’s really nice to hear that he will have no pitch limit, and that his limits will be higher than Joba’s was last year. (more…)

Phil Hughes threw in a simulated game earlier today, and the results were great. He allowed three hits over 8 1/3 scoreless innings while striking out 12 batters (100 pitches/70 for strikes). He pitched against other players in the Yankees extended spring training program.

Hughes was “very happy” with his control and the overall outing.

Now, Hughes will take a flight up to Boston to meet up with his teammates at Fenway. His next extended spring training start will come on Saturday, while the Yankees are in Tampa Bay.

Phil Hughes will make his first start on April 15th against the LA Angels in the Bronx. The Yankees don’t need to carry a 5th starter just yet, so management decided that he will remain on the club’s active roster and pitch in a couple of extended Spring Training games in Tampa. Phil is scheduled to throw in his first extended spring training game tomorrow (and toss 90-100 pitches), and he will join the Yankees in Boston for the second and third game of the series. He will than take a flight back to Tampa, to throw in another extended spring game on April 10th (where he will throw 70 pitches), while the Yankees visit the Rays at Tropicana Field.

I like the way the Yankees are thinking here. It’s not necessary to have him on the team, and it’s important they do this because they have an innings limitation with Hughes. This is a lot better than having to send Hughes to the minor leagues and carry an extra reliever until he was needed.

What does Hughes think about all of this?

“It gives me time to work on some more things — basically like two extra spring starts,” Hughes said. “It’ll be fine. I’m looking forward to the 15th. It’s the first step of this year, and I’m looking forward to starting off well and keeping it going.”

“I’d still like to improve on it, even if I have to go out there and maybe throw some in counts where I normally wouldn’t do it,” Hughes said. “I feel like I still need that comfort level, where it’s going to come later in the year. (more…)

George Steinbrenner was in attendance again today, as the Yankees faced the Tigers at his own ballpark. It looks as if he’s been to a lot of games this spring. From what I’ve seen, they never really show The Boss standing, so this photo was a nice surprise. (Photo Courtesy of the AP)
